Database Publishing

Database Publishing® was already significantly invented and developed by VIVA (or VIVA employees) at the end of the 1980’s. One of the first products with a Database Publishing interface was the typesetting and layout program “LinoPage” (1989-1991) and later “VivaPress” (1992-1994), “VivaPress Professional” (1994-2005) and with effect from 2005 “VivaDesigner” and “VivaNWP Designer”.

What is “Database Publishing”?

“Database Publishing®” is a technology for linking a layout program to a data source. Graphic documents can be created automatically using Database Publishing based on this connection. Instead of creating content such as text or images manually and placing them on a page, the content of a database is placed on the page using a set of rules. These rules define which content is placed in which position on the page or which typographic attributes or formatting a text should have.

What technical solutions are there for “Database Publishing”?

“Database Publishing” is not always “Database Publishing”. There are huge differences between the various solutions. VIVA distinguishes between the following „Database Publishing“ variations and solutions:

1. Manual “Database Publishing”
The manual (classical) automatic creation of documents with a desktop application, which is driven by graphic designer/expert. Manual means in this case that the graphic designer/expert must start the creation manually.

2. Semi-automatic “Database Publishing”:
Creation of documents with a desktop application. Semi-automatic means in this case that
a) content (text, images) is placed on a page in existing elements and may be assigned with attributes and collated automatically.
b) predefined elements and combinations of elements are placed on a page. This technology can be used to place ready-made page sections that could not be produced automatically on a page.

3. Fully automatic “Database Publishing”
Fully automatic creation of documents based on a template and a data source, bnut based on a server application.

With VIVA products you can of course apply all the “Database Publishing” solutions and technologies described.

What legal aspects are there for “Database Publishing”?

The term “Database Publishing®” is a registered trademark of VIVA GmbH and not a general term as is sometimes erroneously assumed. If you use the term “Database Publishing” (e.g. in brochures, on Web pages, in advertising, etc.) you must add a footnote containing the following trademark information: “Database Publishing®” is a registered trademark of VIVA GmbH. On Websites you must include a link to our Website (“http://www.viva.us”).

Edit InDesign files in the Web

With the VivaDesigner Server, you can integrate your customers very simply in production processes and make your InDesign® documents available for editing in the Web.

This video demonstrates how easy it is to edit InDesign/VivaDesigner documents in the Web (VivaCloud).

It works like this: Import your InDesign® documents in VivaDesigner® and edit your documents in a Web browser with everything that makes a good professional layout program: Text in paths, optical alignment, table objects, style sheets, multi-language capability, anchored frames, optical preflight, line counter, smart guides, combined forms, run around text and paths, perfect hyphenation, footnotes and endnotes, change tracking, spell-checking and much more.

Finally, you can open your document in InDesign® again, insofar as you don’t use any functions in VivaDesigner that InDesign doen’t have (i.e. mathematical formulas, line counter, text layouts, headers and footers for text objects, etc.).

Your customers just need a current Web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Chrome. On the customer’s side, no installations are necessary: No program, no fonts, no Java, no Flash and no additional PlugIns – just the naked browser!

This is how to import: Save your InDesign® document in IDML format and open the document in VivaDesigner®. You have the option of saving the document in IDML format again, so as to be able to edit it further in InDesign®.

Quality note: VivaDesigner® imports IDML files from InDesign® CS4 upwards in an extremely good quality. We are constantly improving the quality of the program and are adapting the import to current versions of InDesign®. If you think that individual elements are not being imported correctly, please provide us with the original files. Here we need the original INDD file, the IDML file and a low resolution PDF for checking purposes. Further, it would also be helpful to receive the fonts and images used, that is to say necessary, if the problem should be found here. We will be please to adapt the import filter free of charge. Both the programs VivaDesigner® and InDesign® offer extensive tools for layout and typography. From the point of view of the function range, the programs are very similar, but there are conceptual and functional differences that are mostly to be found in the detail. to see which elements are taken over and in which way, please refer to the chapter of the manual entitled “Exchange with InDesign”.

Protect InDesign Docs

With the additional module “Distributed Publishing”, graphic designers can limit the individual program options and the editing of an InDesign® document on the desktop or in the Web.

Thus the program becomes much simpler to use for end users, and only the areas released to the user may be changed.

This is how it works: Import InDesign® documents in VivaDesigner and, with just a few mouse-clicks, define if a user has, for example, the possibility of entering text or moving images. Colors or Style sheets may be assigned by these users under certain circumstances, but these may not be edited. As the document creator, you protect layers, alias (Master) pages, optionally with an individual password or in the Web with the access rights for the user group/role.

Legal basis for the processing

Art. 6(1) lit. a GDPR serves as the legal basis for processing operations for which we obtain consent for a specific processing purpose. If the processing of personal data is necessary for the performance of a contract to which the data subject is party, as is the case, for example, when processing operations are necessary for the supply of goods or to provide any other service, the processing is based on Article 6(1) lit. b GDPR. The same applies to such processing operations which are necessary for carrying out pre-contractual measures, for example in the case of inquiries concerning our products or services. Is our company subject to a legal obligation by which processing of personal data is required, such as for the fulfillment of tax obligations, the processing is based on Art. 6(1) lit. c GDPR. In rare cases, the processing of personal data may be necessary to protect the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person. This would be the case, for example, if a visitor were injured in our company and his name, age, health insurance data or other vital information would have to be passed on to a doctor, hospital or other third party. Then the processing would be based on Art. 6(1) lit. d GDPR. Finally, processing operations could be based on Article 6(1) lit. f GDPR. This legal basis is used for processing operations which are not covered by any of the abovementioned legal grounds, if processing is necessary for the purposes of the legitimate interests pursued by our company or by a third party, except where such interests are overridden by the interests or fundamental rights and freedoms of the data subject which require protection of personal data. Such processing operations are particularly permissible because they have been specifically mentioned by the European legislator. He considered that a legitimate interest could be assumed if the data subject is a client of the controller (Recital 47 Sentence 2 GDPR).

Authorized interests in the processing that are being pursued by us or a third party

The processing of personal data is based on Article 6 I lit. f DS-GMO and is our legitimate interest in conducting our business for the benefit of all of our employees and our shareholders.

Period for which the personal data will be stored

The criteria used to determine the period of storage of personal data is the respective statutory retention period. After expiration of that period, the corresponding data is routinely deleted, as long as it is no longer necessary for the fulfillment of the contract or the initiation of a contract.

Provision of personal data as statutory or contractual requirement; Requirement necessary to enter into a contract; Obligation of the data subject to provide the personal data; possible consequences of failure to provide such data

We clarify that the provision of personal data is partly required by law (e.g. tax regulations) or can also result from contractual provisions (e.g. information on the contractual partner).

Sometimes it may be necessary to conclude a contract that the data subject provides us with personal data, which must subsequently be processed by us. Cookies

Our websites use cookies. Cookies are text files that are stored and stored on a computer system via an Internet browser. Many websites and servers use cookies. Many cookies contain a so-called cookie ID. A cookie ID is a unique identifier of the cookie. It consists of a string through which Internet pages and servers can be assigned to the specific Internet browser in which the cookie was stored. This allows visited websites and servers to distinguish the individual‘s browser from other internet browsers that contain other cookies. A particular web browser can be recognized and identified by the unique cookie ID.

Some of the cookies we use are deleted after the end of the browser session, i.e. after closing your browser (so-called session cookies). Other cookies remain on your device and allow us or our affiliates to recognize your browser on your next visit (persistent cookies).

Through the use of cookies, we can provide users of this website with more user-friendly services that would not be possible without the use of cookies.
By means of a cookie the information and offers on our website can be optimized to the benefit of the user. Cookies allow us, as already mentioned, to recognize the users of our website. The purpose of this recognition is to make it easier for users to use our website. For example, the user of a website that uses cookies need not reenter their credentials each time they visit the website, as this is done by the website and the cookie stored on the user’s computer system. Another example is the cookie of a shopping basket in the online shop. The online shop remembers the items that a customer has placed in the virtual shopping cart via a cookie.

You can prevent the usage of cookies through our website at any time by means of a corresponding setting of the Internet browser used and thus permanently reject the usage of cookies. Furthermore, cookies already set can be deleted at any time using an internet browser or other software programs. This is possible in all current internet browsers. If you deactivate the usage of cookies in the Internet browser used, not all functions of our website may be fully usable.

Our web pages use scripts. Scripts are small programs on our web pages. We use scripts to optimize our web pages but also to track user behavior in order to improve our web pages and for market research. You can prevent scripts (for example JavaScript) from being executed by means of an appropriate setting of the Internet browser used and thus permanently contradict the application. If you deactivate the use of scripts in the Internet browser used, not all the functions of our website may be fully usable.

Counting pixels

Our websites use counting pixels. Counting pixels consist of a program code and a small image of just a few pixels. With this technology it is possible to check if an e-mail has been read and which links within the e-mail have been clicked. By means of these counting pixels the information, services and offers on our website can be optimized ito the benefit of the user.

However, if IP anonymisation is activated on this website, your IP address will be shortened by Google beforehand within member states of the European Union or other parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be sent to a Google server in the US and shortened there. VivaImpose Page Handling

VivaImpose enables the pages to be imposed to be displayed in different variations, and pages can also be added or removed.

Page Display
The data imported into VivaImpose can be displayed in single page, facing page or in imposed modes. The user can switch between the different viewing modes with the help of the Page Layout Palette.

Facing Page Mode
The WYSIWYG display in Facing page mode enables full control over the page order and the correct application of Panorama pages and their positioning.

Deleting, Moving and Inserting Pages
In Facing page mode single pages can be deleted or moved. All other pages are adjusted accordingly. At the same time blank pages can be inserted in any position in this mode.

Imposed Mode
The imposed spread mode allows a complete WYSIWYG display of the print spreads with all their motifs, both front and back side. At the same time the Page Layout Palette displays the template with the correct page numbers.

Exchange of Pages
In all display modes, the user can at the touch of a button exchange pages or their contents using the standard commands Copy, Paste, Cut and Delete/Remove.

Last Minute Alterations
Users who use VivaImpose as an extension for the layout program VivaPress Professional can create as many objects as they wish on the pages to be imposed. Thus the user has all the possibilities at his fingertips that a modern high performance layout program has to offer. Below are a few examples:

1. Through the manual or automatic creation of text objects on every page, a pagination of the pages can be added, or an existing but incorrect pagination can be overlaid.
2. Through the manual or automatic creation of picture objects, areas of pages can be extended or overlaid. This can be useful, for example, if an advertisement on a page must be changed for another one, or if the page must be completed with the addition of an advertisement which was not available at the time of import.

[bubble class=”viva-bubble-high” author=”Walter”]I just downloaded and tested the newest Free Edition of VivaDesigner (on Ubuntu 9.04) and am really delighted with the program. [bubble class=”viva-bubble-high” author=”James”]I have just downloaded your VivaDesigner program for Linux and am very impressed with it. I am looking for a replacement for MS Publisher [as I am trying to move over to Linux permanently] and it is looking like this may be it.[/bubble]
[bubble class=”viva-bubble-high” author=”Axel”]I just made some extensive tests on the Free Edition yesterday. I can hardly tell you how delighted I am with it. I had actually given up looking for a modern replacement for XPress 3.3 or PageMaker 6.0. Then I remembered “VivaPress” and found your program in the Web. VivaDesigner reveals itself as so much more than a “modern replacement” for the above applications. Just what I was looking for: Full Unicode support, elegant (almost minimalistic) user interface and everything your heart desires in one logical structure, which today has become less and less frequent. A joy to use![/bubble]
